The Paul Brothers

Welcome to the world of the musical Paul Brothers, unquestionably one of Guyana’s premier musical family of the last 40 years. The Paul’s were brought up in a musical environment with both sides of the family represented as active musicians. Una Paul, mother, as an accomplished pianist; and Trenton Paul, father, played the organ, harmonica, violin and sang in the St Andrews Church choir.

The four multi-talented and gifted Paul brothers are recognized as award winning and accomplished musicians and are well respected musically in the Guyanese and international community.

Deryck was the lead singer of the Telstars group for many years in the 60’s early 70’s also performing at the Annual Needy Children’s Fund concerts at QC where he excelled with his powerful vocals performing renditions like “You’ll never walk alone” and “Oh Holy Night” his signature tunes to standing ovations. Deryck’s most recent performance at the Guyana Relief Concert in Tampa Florida got rave reviews for his rendition of “You raised me up (Josh Groban). Deryck was also a member of the later formed Thunderbirds and The Paul Brothers Combo 7 before migrating to Toronto to join his brother Reggie.

Reggie is resident in Miami and has a 6 CD record collection he recorded and produced

In Guyana Reggie was mentored by the great Guyanese guitarist Rector Schultz where he began as a Bass Guitarists. Reggie developed into one of Guyana’s best lead guitarist and vocalists.  Some of the bands in Guyana Reggie performed with include Des Glasford’s Combo 7, The Young Ones, Group Solo, The Thunderbirds, and The Melons. After migrating to Toronto he hooked up with Dave Martin and later joined the Tradewinds as the bassist and resided in Grand Cayman with the group for a while before returning to Toronto where he joined the Dennis Desousa band as lead guitarist and vocalist.

Reggie now performs in the Miami area.

Keith (Iauwata) at an early age (13) Keith started performing locally as a bassist and singer on most of the variety shows in and around Georgetown sometimes as the opening act for the international acts that passed thru Guyana.

Iauwata joined the famous Tom Charles and The Syncopators at age 15 and was one of the youngest professional musicians in Guyana at the time. Iauwata is a well renowned multi instrumentalist/vocalist whose musical voyage started from as early as his teenage years where he had the privilege to perform with Jimmy Cliff and other foreign artistes in Guyana. Iauwata left Guyana and recorded his first album “Keith Paul and the GT Boom Band.” Since then his journey has been ever developing, performing and recording traveling all over the world with many established artist such Ike & Tina Turner, Sly & Robbie, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Luciano, Horace Andy, The Specials & UB40 to name a few. After spending a considerable amount of years traveling the world Iauwata began developing his Songwriting & Production skills joining and developing groups such as Truths & Rights (Canada), Hardskin (UK), Eek A Mouse (Jamaica). Iauwata has most recently recorded an instrumental Jazz album namely Iauwata & The Black Box Orchestra which is due for release shortly.

Xola (Terence) bassist performed in Guyana with the Paul Brothers Combo 7 then immigrated to Toronto Canada where he became one of the original members of Canada’s premier Reggae Bands Truth and Rights. Xola also reestablished his original GT band Le Dub Sac in Toronto in the mid 80s with his brother Iauwata, and some of Toronto’s finest musicians of the day Wadi Gad, Ishaka, Afua Cooper and Ahmed. Xola now performs in Toronto and is continuing his writing and producing.

Deryck and Xola reside in Toronto, Canada; Reggie resides in Miami, USA and Iauwata is an international ambassador of music with regular visits to Guyana, New York, London and Toronto. The brothers have recorded several albums and Cds’ as individual artists but came together last year (2006) to record their family CD which is due out shortly (early 2007).

Events are presently being scheduled for their CD releases and performance in Toronto and other locations in North America and Guyana with a possibility of a launching in England in 2008.
