Starlift – Dance Again Mr Bojangles

Starlift Steel Orchestra

Three time National Panorama Champions, Starlift celebrated 51 years as a steel orchestra this year. A feat that is worthy of mention as there are many ingredients that go into the making of a successful steel orchestra, the main one being excellent music.

This is definitely showcased on Starlift’s new CD. The band can easily boast of its versatility as it displays a mastering of repertoire from seven different arrangers and composers such as Ray Holman, Michael Boothman, Eastlyn Hinds, Herschel Puckerin, Carlyle Oliver, Neville Whitlle and Barry Mannette.

Starlift’s uniqueness is also evident as it merges the steelpan with the remarkable fretwork of jazz guitarist Michael Boothman. A new Starlift has emerged over the past year that has executed music from Destra Garcia to Celine Dion, from Ella Andell to Bob Marley; but has still managed to maintain its identity with songs for which it has become famous, such as Du Du Yemi and Mr. Bojangles.

La Orquesta De Tambores Metalicos Starlift

El campeón nacional de Panorama por tres veces, Starlift celebró 51 años como orquesta de tambores metálicos este año. Es una hazaña que merece ser mencionado dado que hay muchos elementos que se necesitan para que tenga éxito una orquesta de tambores metálicos, de los cuales se destaca la música excelente.

Este último se ve claramente en el nuevo disco compacto de Starlift. La banda puede jactarse de su versatilidad porque muestra como domina el repertorio de siete adaptadores y compositores distintos, tales como Ray Holman, Michael Boothman, Eastlyn Hinds, Herschel Puckerin, Carlyle Oliver, Neville Whitlle and Barry Mannette.

La singularidad de Starlift queda bien clara también porque fusiona el steelpan (tambor metálico) con el calado increíble del guitarrista de jazz Michael Boothman. Un Starlift nuevo ha surgido durante el último año, un Starlfit que toca música de Destra Garcia a Celine Dion, de Ella Andell a Bob Marley, pero ha conseguido mantener todavía su identidad con canciones por las cuales se hizo famoso, por ejemplo, Du Du Yemi y Mr. Bojangles.

Each mas in a Sailor band has its distinctive costume and dance and Fireman is easily identifiable in his decorated, high-collared, black merino, black bell bottoms, gloves and bearded, goggle-eyed masks, making him a rather fearsome looking character in the band. He carries a long iron rod for ‘stoking’ the fire to keep the ship’s engines running.

The climax of his dance is throwing this rod ahead of him, then dancing backwards, limbo-style, to retrieve it, while miming the blasting heat of the ship’s furnace. This is one of the most testing dances in Carnival requiring agility, strength, flexibility as well as a creative imagination. Among the most renown Firemen were dancers like ‘Stretch’ Cox and ‘Jim Bill’ Sobers, whose creativity helped fashion the dance, as we know it today.

Cada personaje en una banda de Sailor tiene su disfraz y baile particular y Fireman puede ser identificado muy fácilmente con su negro merino decorado y con alto cuello, sus pantalones de campaña negros, sus guantes y barba, y sus antifaces con ojos desorbitados- todo lo que le hace parecer un personaje bastante espantoso en la banda. Lleva una barra larga de hierro para atizar el fuego para que sigan funcionando los motores del buque.

El punto culminante de su baile consiste en lanzar la barra delante de él, pues en bailar, de modo limbo, hacia detrás para recogerla, mientras que hace mímica del calor fuertísimo del horno del buque. Este baile es uno de los más duros del carnaval porque exige la agilidad, la fuerza, la flexibilidad así como una imaginación creativa. Entre los Firemen más famosos destacan bailadores tales como Stretch Cox y Jim Bill Sobers, cuya creatividad contribuyó a cambiar el baile, hasta la forma en que existe hoy día.
